Lalita Devi Tanjore Painting – The Divine Assembly

Sri Lalita Devi with Bala Tripura Sundari and the Divine Parivara

A magnificent and highly elaborate portrayal of Sri Lalita Devi, seated majestically upon her royal throne, surrounded by a grand assembly of Gods, Goddesses and divine beings.

What makes this Tanjore painting particularly distinctive is its rich multi-deity composition. Unlike conventional Lalita Devi paintings that focus primarily on the Goddess herself, this artwork brings together Bala Tripura Sundari, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Shiva, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Vishnu, Brahma, Rudra and other divine figures, creating an expansive representation of the divine universe around Sri Lalita Devi.

The composition is further enriched by the Sri Chakram at her lotus feet, elaborate celestial ornamentation, richly decorated throne, Prabhavali and intricate Tanjore relief work.

 Collector's Tanjore Painting

This is an artwork for someone looking for more than a conventional Goddess painting.

The combination of Lalita Devi, Bala Tripura Sundari, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Shiva, Rudra, Vishnu, Brahma, Kartikeya, Ganesha and Sri Chakram gives this composition an exceptional sense of scale and spiritual richness.

It makes a striking centrepiece for a pooja room, living room, meditation space, traditional home, office or heritage interior, and is particularly meaningful as a gift for devotees and collectors of Indian traditional art.

A magnificent gathering of the divine — brought together in the timeless art of Tanjore.

The Divine Assembly

At the heart of the composition is Sri Lalita Devi, magnificently adorned with an elaborate crown, jewellery and traditional attire. Her majestic presence forms the focal point of an extraordinary gathering of deities.

Bala Tripura Sundari

Seated prominently before Lalita Devi, Bala Tripura Sundari represents the youthful and graceful aspect of the Divine Mother. Her presence adds another dimension to the central composition and creates a beautiful visual relationship between the principal Goddess and her divine manifestation.

Goddess Lakshmi

The presence of Goddess Lakshmi brings the symbolism of prosperity, abundance and auspiciousness into the composition. Her richly adorned form complements the grandeur and opulence of the Tanjore artwork.

Goddess Saraswati

Goddess Saraswati, associated with knowledge, wisdom, learning and the arts, forms another important presence within this divine assembly. Her inclusion makes the composition particularly meaningful for those who appreciate learning, music, literature and traditional Indian arts.

Lord Shiva

Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities represented within the composition, adds the dimension of divine consciousness, transformation and cosmic power. His presence alongside Lalita Devi reinforces the broader spiritual character of the artwork.

Lord Vishnu

Lord Vishnu is represented reclining beside the central throne, adding an especially distinctive element to this composition. His presence brings the symbolism of preservation and cosmic order into the divine assembly.

Lord Brahma

Lord Brahma, the creator, forms part of the gathering of principal deities surrounding Lalita Devi. His presence contributes to the representation of the cosmic functions of creation, preservation and transformation.

Lord Rudra

Rudra, representing a powerful and transformative aspect of the divine, is also included in the composition. His presence adds further depth to the portrayal of the many dimensions of divine power.

Lord Ganesha

At the lower portion of the painting, Lord Ganesha is prominently depicted. Revered as the remover of obstacles and the Lord of auspicious beginnings, his presence makes the artwork especially suitable for homes, prayer spaces and new beginnings.

Lord Kartikeya / Subrahmanya

Lord Kartikeya, also known as Subrahmanya or Murugan, is represented among the divine figures in the composition. His presence brings the symbolism of courage, wisdom and divine protection to this grand assembly.

A Universe of Deities in a Single Tanjore Painting

The greatest distinction of this artwork is the sheer richness of its composition.

Rather than presenting Sri Lalita Devi in isolation, the painting brings together multiple manifestations and deities associated with the broader Hindu spiritual tradition. The result is an artwork that can be appreciated at several levels:

  • Sri Lalita Devi as the central divine presence
  • Bala Tripura Sundari as the youthful manifestation of the Divine Mother
  • Lakshmi representing prosperity and abundance
  • Saraswati representing knowledge and the arts
  • Shiva and Rudra representing divine consciousness and transformative power
  • Vishnu representing preservation and cosmic order
  • Brahma representing creation
  • Kartikeya / Subrahmanya representing courage and divine protection
  • Ganesha representing auspicious beginnings and removal of obstacles
  • Sri Chakram occupying an important position at the feet of Lalita Devi

Together, these elements make this one of the more elaborate Lalita Devi compositions in the Chola Impressions collection.

The Craftsmanship

This elaborate composition demands considerably more detailing than a single-deity Tanjore painting.

The artisans carefully build the raised relief for the central deity, divine figures, crowns, jewellery, throne, Prabhavali and other ornamental elements. These raised areas are subsequently finished with vibrant colours, decorative stones and authentic 22-carat gold foil.

The numerous figures and intricate architectural details make this painting particularly labour-intensive, while the gold work creates a visual hierarchy that draws the eye from Lalita Devi at the centre to the surrounding divine assembly.

The completed artwork is traditionally mounted in a Mani / Beaded wooden frame and protected with unbreakable acrylic glass.
